Tips:
-
Gradebook: When entering
grades in any view of the Gradebook, always use the "Submit" button
rather then pressing [Enter] on your keyboard. Using the [Enter]
key in some areas, such as the "Item Grade List" view of the Gradebook,
can result in removal of all user grades for a particular item if you
aren't careful. This is due to the way the [Enter] key defaults
for some exams.
-
SafeAssign:
Important -
After copying "SafeAssign" assignments from one course to
another, or after using "Course Copy" to copy content from one course to
another where "SafeAssign" assignments exist in the source
course, you will need to go into your destination course "Control
Panel", choose "SafeAssign" and choose the "Synchronize
this course" link. This step is required in order to
synchronize the "SafeAssign" documents and assignments to the
correct course on the Blackboard server.
-
Blackboard Digital Dropbox
Being Phased Out
- The Digital Dropbox in Blackboard will no longer be available
after August 6, 2007. Assignment Management feature to be used
instead. Click here to read more.
-
Microsoft Office 2007:
Microsoft Office 2007 files are saved by default with a 4-character
extension (i.e. .docx, .xlsx, etc.), which will initially be
incompatible with older versions of MS Office (both on PC and
Macintosh). To maintain compatibility when sharing files and posting in
Blackboard, users should save MS Office 2007 files in the MS Office 2003
format (if you know those needing access to the files have access to MS
Office or MS Office viewers). A more widely compatible format to save
text type files in is Rich Text Format (.rtf). The Text format (.txt) is
also widely compatible.
Click here for instructions on how to save MS Word 2007 documents as
MS Word 97 or 2003 documents (download
Adobe Reader if needed).
-
System
Requirements: Our
System Requirements page has
been updated. Please review. Changes include
browser/OS configurations and Java Plug-in requirements.
-
Assessments:
The "Save" button is of no use in exams set to "Force
Completion" enabled, since students are not actually able to
return to those exams to complete them. (Note:
We have requested that Blackboard developers remove the "Save"
button from exams with "Force Completion" enabled.)
-
Assessments
and Gradebook: Be sure not to confuse the new "Self-Assessment
Options" (available in "Modify the Test Options" in the
area the test is deployed) with the standard options available
through the "Gradebook" for a particular test, under "Item
Information". The "Hide the score of this test from the
Gradebook" option under "Self-Assessment Options" (on the
"Modify the Test Options" page in the area where the test is
deployed) actually hides the score in the instructor’s "Gradebook"
(not just the students' "My Grades" view), prohibits the
instructor from viewing the students' submitted answers on the
assessment and excludes the test from "Gradebook" score
calculations. If you just want to hide the score of a test
from displaying in the students' view of their grades (called "My
Grades" from the student view), you just need to choose “No”
for the “Make item available to users” option under “Item
Information” available through the 'Gradebook" for a
specific test. Also, if you want to exclude an item from being
included in "Gradebook" score calculations, choose “No”
for the “Include item in Gradebook score calculations” under
“Item Information” available through the Gradebook for a
specific test.
-
Page
Caching: If something doesn't display or function as
expected, first try clicking the refresh button on your browser
(some browsers require you to hold the [Shift] key down while
clicking the Refresh button). Issues related to caching of pages may result
in your browser looking at old versions of pages rather than
refreshed pages. This may interfere with logging in, using
certain areas like the Discussion Board, etc. If simply using
the Refresh button doesn't work, please clear all
"Temporary Internet Files" and "Cookies" (in IE, from the "Tools"
menu then "Internet Options"), or all "Private Data" (in Firefox,
from the "Tools" menu, then "Clear Private Data", selecting all
available check boxes). You may also need to clear your JAR
cache in your Java Plug-in (see "Clearing
JAR Cache"). For some users, it may be necessary to restart your computer.
-
Discussion
Board: If you save a
thread as a draft, you will need to choose to "Show All" on the
threads page in order to see the saved draft.
-
For Respondus
users: In order to use Respondus with Blackboard 7.x you will
need to upgrade to the latest version of Respondus (3.5). Below are
the instructions for updating Respondus if you already have it
installed on your computer. Using "Check for Update" to Obtain Respondus 3.5 If Respondus 3.0 is already installed, it is possible to obtain the
Respondus 3.5 update using the "Check for Update" feature. There are
several items to note about this process: 1) When you run "Check for Update" it will first upgrade you to
Respondus 3.0.4d, which among other features includes a new updater
tool. Once the Respondus 3.0.4d update is complete, exit Respondus,
restart Respondus, and then select "Check for Update" again to
initiate the update to Respondus 3.5. 2) By default, the Respondus 3.5 update will create a new
"RespondusCampus35" folder at c:\Program Files\RespondusCampus35\ .
This allows you to update to Respondus 3.5 without affecting a
previous installation of Respondus (a new shortcut for Respondus 3.5
will appear on the Windows desktop). The Respondus file format
hasn't changed, so Respondus project files can be opened/modified
with either Respondus 3.0 or Respondus 3.5. Technical questions about Respondus 3.5 can be submitted to
support@respondus.com.
-
Discussion
Board: Using the
"Collect" feature in the Discussion Board area: Enter the
Discussion Board (Click on the title of the forum), select the
thread, then all of the messages appear on the subsequent screen.
The messages appear on a "preview screen" at the midpoint of your
computer screen, with a scrollbar on their right-hand side.
You will see in that preview screen a drop-down box on the bottom
left hand corner that says "Select All". Click on that, then click
on the "Collect" button at the top of the menu panel in that preview
window. This will place all of the students' posts to that thread on
one page for grading, etc. You can then sort by name, date, etc. if
you need to.
-
Virtual Text
Box Editor/WYSIWYG: In Firefox, using
the context menu or keyboard shortcuts to Cut, Copy and Paste is
prohibited by security features in the browser (actually you can
Copy using these tools, even though it says it is prohibited). However, you
can Cut, Copy and Paste using the browser's "Edit" menu.
One alternative, if you want to be able to use Paste from the
context menu or keyboard shortcut, is to disable the Visual Text Box
Editor in your Blackboard settings. To do this, click the "My
Institution" tab and choose "Personal Information". Click "Set
Visual Text Box Editor Options" and select "Unavailable" then click
"Submit". Click "OK" then click the "My Institution" tab.
You can now use the context menu or keyboard shortcuts to Paste, as
well as Cut and Copy.
Alternately, Firefox currently provides instructions for editing a
certain Firefox file to allow the Cut, Paste and Copy tools to work
using the context menu and shortcut keys. This is a more
complex option, and you should be aware that Firefox placed this
feature there for security reasons. We are in no way recommending
you make this change, but only offer it is information for you to
pursue as an option. The instructions for doing this are provided by
Firefox at
http://www.mozilla.org/editor/midasdemo/securityprefs.html.
Editing this file as instructed tells Firefox to allow cut, copy,
paste commands using the context menu and shortcut keys. If you
aren't familiar with editing these kinds of files, I would suggest
seeking assistance from someone who has worked with these kinds of
files.
-
Assessments: When taking timed
exams in using the Firefox browser, the timer will not show using
the default settings in Firefox. You may need to make
following change in the Firefox Options in order to see the timer.
In the Firefox browser menu, go to the "Tools" menu and choose
"Options". Click on "Content" from the choices across the top
of the "Options" window. Click on "Advanced" across from the
"Enable JavaScript" option (both the "Enable JavaScript" and "Enable
Java" should already be selected). In the "Advanced" window,
choose to allow scripts to "Change status bar text". Click
"OK" to exit out of the "Advanced" window, then "OK" again to exit
out of the "Options" box. The timer should now show in timed
exams. However, it typically takes it a few minutes to load
the timer into the status bar, so go ahead and begin your test, and
when the timer shows, it will reflect the time already passed.
The timer is running, it just takes it a few minutes to show up.
This delay will vary depending on Internet connection speed.

Gradebook:
(Special Procedures to Avoid Perpetuating Error): If you
are experiencing any of the following issues related to the
Gradebook in Blackboard, please continue reading below for options
to choose from to avoid perpetuating the issues in future courses: -Download Gradebook error. -Missing totals columns. -Students can't use "My Grades" function to see grades.
While we are still working on a solution to this issue in the
specific courses you reported, we need to make you aware of options
available to you to avoid carrying this issue over to future
courses. We realize you may need to copy the content of the courses
you are having these issues in, over to new course shells for future
semesters. Please use one of the two options below in order to avoid
carrying over these issues to the new courses:
-
Option 1:
If you need to use the content from the course that is having
issues, because it is the most up to date content, please use the
Export/Import method
described on our web site.
-
Option 2:
If you prefer to use the simpler Course Copy method, and the
content from a previous semester's version of the course is
sufficient, you may choose to use the Course Copy function to
copy content from a previous semester's version of the course, but
not from the course where the Gradebook issues are occurring. The
Course Copy method
is described on our web site.
Please choose one
of these options far enough ahead of the semester so that you can
check the issues and report to us any problems. If one of the
options above results in the issues carrying over, please contact us
immediately so that we can assist you in correcting the situation
before classes begin. (This may involved clearing all content from
the course and trying an alternate copy or import method.)
-
Gradebook:
When adding a graded forum that you want included in Gradebook
calculations, you will need to go to the Gradebook and click on the
forum name, and go into "Item Information" and choose the option to
include the graded forum in Gradebook calculations. This is
set to "No" by default.
-
Other: More may be added
as information is available. Please check back later for updates.

Resolved Issues:
-
Discussion Board:
Some users receive the following message when trying to post to a
Discussion Board forum: "A database error occurred".
A fix was implemented by Blackboard Support to
address this issue. No additional reports of this issue
continuing have been received. We believe it to be resolved.
-
Discussion Board:
The "Collect" function isn't working at the thread level (the page
that lists all threads in a forum). However, it is working at
the level inside an individual thread (after clicking into a thread,
the page that displays all related posts).
With the installation of Service Pack 1 for
7.1, the Collect feature now works at all levels.
-
Assessments: The "Save" button should not
be used on any type of exam due to a new issue discovered
recently. Clicking the "Save"
button clears answers from exam questions, regardless of
settings such as "Force Completion", "Multiple Attempt", etc.
Also, students may not notice the answers are cleared because their
view may still show the answers after clicking "Save".
Please instruct your students to avoid using the "Save"
button on any exam. This issue was
resolved with the installation of Service Pack 1 for 7.1.
-
Course Copy
and Import Package: When using these features, some
users may see duplicate "Assignments" areas in the
destination course, one empty and one with the copied or imported
content. To identify and remove the empty "Assignments"
area, go to the course "Control Panel" of the course that has
the extra "Assignments" area and choose "Manage Course Menu".
Rename and first "Assignments" area you see in the list using
the "Modify" button (name it something like "Assignments-empty".
Be sure to click "Submit" to finalize the change. Go
back to the "Control Panel" and click on "Assignments-empty"
(if that is what you named it) to confirm it is the empty one.
Once you confirm it is the empty one, go back to the "Manage
Course Menu" area and click the "Remove" button to the
right of "Assignments-empty" to remove it. If you wish,
you can then relocate the correct "Assignments" item to
appear closer to the top of the menu using the sort order numerical
drop downs with each item. This issue
appears to have been resolved with the installation of Service Pack
1 for 7.1. Note: Any alteration of the
name of an area in a source course (including html tags for
centering, color changes, etc.) will still result in a duplicate
area in the destination course.
-
Course Copy:
The standard Course Copy function (under Course Options) has failed
to copy certain kinds of content for some instructors.
Assignments and Assessment/Survey linkage, as well as Gradebook
representation for those items, are the types of content not copying
correctly in the reports we have had so far. This issue was
resolved 06-30-06. The standard Course Copy no longer fails to
incorrectly copy items listed above. In our testing of the
issue after the fix was installed, the items in question function
normally in the destination course after a Course Copy.
-
Assignments: Users inability
to submit "Assignments" using IE. This issue was resolved
05-25-06. Users should now be able to use IE to submit
"Assignments".
-
Gradebook:
Entering a grade in the "Override" box causes a calculation error in
the "Running Weighted Total", but only from the instructor's
Gradebook view. The student view seems to still reflect the
correct calculation. This issue was resolved 06-30-06.
Our tests reveal that the override box no longer causes a
calculation error in the Running Weighted Total from the
instructor's view.
-
Internet
Explorer For Windows
users: Due to critical security updates released by Microsoft,
changes have occurred in Internet Explorer that interfere with some
functionality when using IE with Blackboard. It may now be
necessary to use the browser Firefox for many functions in
Blackboard. (See our
System Requirements page for
a download link for Firefox.) Most of
these issues seem to be gradually fading. Some users may still
need to use Firefox for certain functions. Use the approved
browser that works best for your configuration (see the
System
Requirements and the
Browser Configuration Guide for
more information).

New issues discovered by JSU:
-
NEW!
- Collaboration (posted
01-14-08): The Start and End settings for Dates of
Availability in the Collaboration sessions settings (under Manage)
are not saving upon submission. The work around for now is to
just make it available at the time you need it. This issue has
been reported to Blackboard Support for evaluation.
-
NEW! - Graded Forums (posted
12-18-07): We have discovered an issue related to both
Graded Forums and Course Copy. (Note: By Graded Forums,
we are not referring to items added manually to the Gradebook that
you assign grades to. A Graded Forum is a specific setting
assigned to a forum in the Discussion Board for automated
integration with the Gradebook.) The issue is that if you have
a Graded Forum in a course, and then you copy that course, or even
just the Discussion Board, to another course shell, and subsequently
decide to remove the Graded Forum from the copy (the destination
course), then your Graded Forum in the original source course is
adversely affected (grades lost, removal of forum from Gradebook,
etc.). The work around for this issue, until resolved, is as
follows: Do not remove Graded Forums from courses that are
copies of other courses, but rather simply make the Graded Forum
unavailable in the course if you wish to not use it.
Additionally, you will need to change settings for the Graded Forum
in the Gradebook to ensure it is not listed in the students' "My
Grades" area, and is not included in Gradebook calculations.
If you need assistance with these procedures, please contact the
Office of Distance Education at
DLHelp@jsu.edu or (256) 782-8172.
-
NEW! - Page
Caching: Due to our recent 12-14-07 Blackboard upgrade to
7.3.159.29, you may have to refresh your browser for your Blackboard
login to work correctly. Please review the "Page
Caching" tip above for more details about this topic.
-
My Grades:
NOTE: MAY BE RESOLVED - UNDER
EVALUATION.
The Running Weighted Total in the student My Grades view is
including items in it’s calculation that have been set to be
excluded from Gradebook calculations. The instructor Gradebook is
correctly excluding those items in the Running Weighted Total
column. The Running Total is correctly excluding those items in both
the instructor Gradebook and the student My Grades view. The result
is that the instructor sees one Running Weighted Total, and the
student sees a different one. This issue has been reported to
Blackboard Support for evaluation.
-
Gradebook:
When you click a specific Gradebook item, and choose "Item Grade
List", from the available options, there is a feature called "Clear
attempts for all users". Beside that statement is a drop down
menu with several options to choose from. If you choose the
"Lowest scored attempt" option, it will not only remove the lowest
scored attempt for students that have submitted multiple attempts,
but will also remove the only attempt for students who have
submitted only one attempt, leaving no grade at all. Though
the other options have not been tested at this time, choosing the
other options in the drop down menu will likely provide similar
results. In our tests so far, this seems to only apply to
grades listed in the "Calculated Grade" box. It doesn't seem
to affect grades entered in the "Override" box. This issue has
been reported to Blackboard Support for evaluation.
-
Discussion
Board: If you create groups, and add graded Discussion
Board forums in each group (and possibly other graded items), you
will notice each group's forum listed for every student in the
Gradebook (rather than just the forum that is in the group that
student is assigned to). The same is true from the student's
view of "My Grades". However, the student only sees the group
discussion board forums that are in the group they are assigned to.
The extra forums only show up in the Gradebook for each student.
This may be a little confusing to the students, but as long as they
see the grade for the group discussion board forum they submitted,
they can just disregard the presence of the other forums (from other
groups) listed in their "My Grades" view. This issue has been
reported to Blackboard Support for evaluation.
-
Discussion
Board: We have had reports of missing "Reply" buttons
within limited Discussion Board forums of only some courses.
If you are experiencing this issue and have not already reported it,
please report it to DLHelp@jsu.edu
and indicate the Blackboard Course ID and forums in which the issues
is occurring. A workaround is to re-create the forum. Do
not use the built in copy function to do this, because the issue
will carry over. Just use the copy/paste functions in Windows
to copy text from the old forum to the new. If possible,
please retain the old forum (just make it unavailable to students),
so that we can still troubleshoot the issue. This issue has
been reported to Blackboard Support for evaluation.
-
Assessments:
(Note: This issue applies only to exams deployed and setup
between 5/16/06 and 7/14/06.) It has come to our attention
that the "Multiple Attempts" setting for exams may have been reset
for some courses. If you selected the "Multiple Attempts" option for
an exam AND entered a limitation on the number of attempts allowed
(i.e., such as 2 or 3 attempts, rather than unlimited), please check
your exam settings in the area it was deployed to make sure it is
still set to the desired number and that the "Number of attempts"
radio button is still correctly selected. If the exam has been
made available and test attempts have been completed by students,
you may also want to verify the students did not exceed your
intended limitation on the number of attempts. You may use the
"Clear Attempt" function to eliminate any attempts over your
restricted number, if you find that these attempts are present.
-
Gradebook:
NOTE: MAY BE RESOLVED - UNDER
EVALUATION. The running total and running weighted total do not display
correctly when the grade type is not displayed as a percentage.
This issue has been reported to Blackboard Support for evaluation -
it is possible that the issue is resolved, but we are still testing
to confirm.
-
Gradebook:
NOTE: MAY BE RESOLVED - UNDER
EVALUATION. The value of the weighted running total does not change when the
option to "Exempt Ungraded Items" is toggled on and off. This
issue has been reported to Blackboard Support for evaluation - - it
is possible that the issue is resolved, but we are still testing to
confirm.
-
Assessments:
NOTE: MAY BE RESOLVED - UNDER
EVALUATION. When adding questions to an exam using the "From a question pool
or assessment" option, the "Default Point Value" entered
into the "Creation Settings" for the exam may not be
recognized. In this case, a value of "0" is assigned to each
exam question added from the question pool or assessment. This
issue has been reported to Blackboard Support for evaluation.
-
Gradebook:
ISSUE UNDER EVALUATION - Running Total and Weighted Total columns are
not showing up in the instructor's Gradebook for certain courses.
Also, in those same course, the "Download Grades" feature presents
an error when clicked on. Our tests so far indicate these are
the same courses in which students are getting the error when trying
to view grades using the "My Grades" tool (issue described below). This issue has been reported to Blackboard Support
for evaluation. Please see "Gradebook: (Special Procedures
to Avoid Perpetuating Error)" under "Tips"
above for more information.
-
My
Grades:
ISSUE UNDER EVALUATION - Some students are experiencing an error that
prohibits them from being able to view their grades using the "My
Grades" tool. Instructors should make alternate
arrangements for providing grades to students until this issue is
resolved. This issue has been reported to Blackboard Support
for evaluation. Please see "Gradebook: (Special Procedures
to Avoid Perpetuating Error)" under "Tips"
above for more information.
-
Performance
Dashboard: The Discussion Board links within the "Performance
Dashboard" may not function. This issue has been reported
to Blackboard Support for evaluation.
-
Discussion
Board: We have had reports that the "Unread
Posts" count is inconsistent from one area to the next.
Top level counts, for forums may differ from counts listed within
forums, for each thread. Indications so far are that the top
level number is accurate, and the number listed for each thread may
be incorrect. This may not be the case for every user or every
forum, thread, post, etc. This issue has been reported to
Blackboard Support for evaluation.
-
BBGS Course Copy:
ISSUE WILL NOT BE RESOLVED - The BBGS Course Copy tool (under Course Tools) currently generates an error
message which prevents the tool from working properly. Please
use the standard "Course
Copy" tool. THE BBGS COURSE COPY TOOL HAS BEEN
DISABLED INDEFINITELY.
-
Discussion Board:
Author email links available within threads in a Discussion Board
forum will generate an "Access Denied" message upon clicking
"Submit" to send the email. Our testing indicates the email is
actually sent. Do not attempt to use the login box available
or cancel, simply click on a navigation button or bread crumb link
to move off of the "Access Denied" message page.
This issue has been reported to Blackboard Support for evaluation.
-
Discussion Board:
RESOLUTION IN PROGRESS - NEW:
POSSIBLE WORK AROUND SOLUTIONS ADDED BELOW - Some users may get a message that says, "Click Here to view
alternate content for browsers that do not support IFRAMES" in the
area inside a thread that should display the thread detail, just
below the list of related posts. Normally, you would see the
thread detail of the post (in a lower box) that is selected in the
upper area where all related posts are listed. Most users see
the normal display. This has been reported to Blackboard
Support and is being evaluated. For those users who get the
IFRAMES message, the following are a couple of possible work around
solutions reported by other users to have resolved the issue for
them:
-
We have reports
from other users that indicate the following may be a solution for
the IFRAMES issue if you have McAfee Internet Security running on
your computer that is experiencing the IFRAMES issue. (We are not
necessarily recommending you leave these particular McAfee settings
disabled full time, but we offer it only as something you might
consider doing when you know you are about to only use the
Blackboard Discussion Board area. This solution has not been tested,
since we do not have McAfee Internet Security installed, and also to
this day have been unable to duplicate this issue):
-
Disable the
Privacy Service and Ad Blocking features in McAfee by following
these steps:
1. Right-click the McAfee icon in your system tray (on the task bar
on the right).
2. Click Privacy Service.
3. Click Disable.
4. A window appears - Enter the Administrator password.
5. Click OK.
6. The McAfee icon turns black in color until you enable Privacy
Service.
To re-enable McAfee Privacy Service, follow the steps outlined
below:
1. Right-click the McAfee icon in your system tray (on the task bar
on the right).
2. Click Privacy Service.
3. Click Enable.
-
Another possible
solution is to enable the "Launching Programs and Files in an IFRAME"
option in Internet Explorer settings:
-
To try this,
complete the following steps in Internet Explorer:
1. In "Internet Explorer", from the "Tools" menu at the top of the
browser, choose "Internet Options".
2. Click the "Security" tab.
3. Click the "Custom Level" button.
4. Scroll to the section with the heading "Miscellaneous".
5. Scroll to the item that says "Launching Programs and Files in an
IFRAME".
6. Select "Enable".
7. Click "OK" to exit out of that window.
8. Click "OK" to exit out of "Internet Options".
9. Now go to your Blackboard course and try to view the Discussion
Board posts and see if the IFRAMES message still occurs.
10. If it does still occur, logout of Blackboard, open up "Internet
Options" again and remove "Temporary Internet Files" and "Cookies",
and close the browser.
11. Clear your Java cache from your Java plugin - from your
computer's "Control Panel" (from the "Start" menu), open up "Java"
and choose "Delete Temporary Internet Files", and click "OK" to exit
out of the Java plugin.
12. Restart your computer, and try the Discussion Board again.
-
Discussion Board:
ISSUE UNDER EVALUATION - Users' posts are now identified by first and last name only, rather
than first, middle and last name. Users with identical first
and last names may need to include their full name in their posts
until this display issue is changed. Also, sorting by author
may result in posts being sorted by the first names of the authors.
These issues have been reported to Blackboard Support for
evaluation.
