Academic
Excellence: Using Blackboard for Better Learning (1.5 hours)
This workshop is designed to show administration how and why
Blackboard impacts student learning. Topics focus on what Blackboard can do
for online and traditional courses as well as the additional educational
technology resources that are available to faculty at JSU for effective
course development.
What is
Blackboard? (30 minutes)
Topics covered in this workshop include a general overview of
Blackboard at JSU, usage statistics and a review of exemplary courses.
Getting
Familiar with My Blackboard Course (2 hours)
Topics covered in this workshop include Bb fundamentals, basic content
structuring, announcements, staff information, course settings, course copy,
and course merge, and user management.
The first 1.5 hours will be the actual
training session with instruction and participation in a specially designed
training course shell. This will be followed by 30 minutes of hands-on
activity in your own course or, if preferred, the training course. The last
30 minutes is optional.

held on Wednesday, June 4, 2008 from 9:00-11:00 a.m. Register

Issues: Fundamentals of Online Instruction (1-1.5 hours)
Topics in this workshop include an overview of current issues in
online learning and teaching and suggested best use of Blackboard as a
supplement and/or an interactive learning experience.
Adding
Content and Assignments (2.5 hours)
Topics
covered in this workshop include course design and customization, course
links, learning units, a NEW syllabus tool, glossary manager, assignment submission tool,
and SafeAssign assignments.
This workshop is geared
towards faculty who have completed the “Getting Familiar with My Blackboard
Course” or the equivalent.
The first 2 hours will be the actual training
session with instruction and participation in a specially designed training
course shell. This will be followed by 30 minutes of hands-on activity in
your own course or, if preferred, the training course. The last 30 minutes
is optional.
This training will be
held on Wednesday, June 11, 2008 from 9:00-11:30 a.m. Register

Copyright in Bb (1-1.5 hours)
Topics in this workshop include copyrights and copy wrongs, JSU’s Policy on
Use of Copyrighted Material, TEACH Act, Fair Use Act, Copyright Act, Fair
Use Guidelines for Distance Education, and library distance education
services.
Content Issues: Online
Assessment Strategies (1-1.5 hours)
Topics in this workshop include evaluation of student performance
assessment, methods that reduce the risk of cheating and plagiarism,
assessment basics, designing a course that aligns with assessment methods,
and using rubrics as an assessment tool.
This workshop is geared
towards faculty who have completed “Adding Content and Assignments” or the
equivalent.
Accessibility Issues (1-1.5
hours)
Topics in this workshop include universal design principles (course menu
design, course organizational structure, links, graphics, ALT tags, digital
voice recordings), learning styles, supplemental content, and Blackboard
Backpack.
Using the Technology You
Already Have (1.5 hours)
This workshop will showcase various topics and tools on a rotating basis
including but not limited to grading assignments electronically (MS Word),
creating and using rubrics (MS Word), Respondus LE, and tips and tricks in
PowerPoint.
The currently scheduled training, "Electronic Grading in Microsoft Word 2003,"
gives step-by-step instruction for four options to electronically grade
student assignments in Microsoft Word: track changes, reviewing toolbar,
using macros to create a custom toolbar, and voice comments.
This workshop is geared towards faculty/staff
who have at least an intermediate level knowledge of Microsoft Word
(existing users of the software who can create, edit, format, print, save
files in various formats; run spell checker; cut, copy, and paste
text/images; use left and right-click mouse functionality; must possess file
management skills such as creating copies of files, creating folders, moving
files to and from folders in different directories, etc.).

Strategies for Increasing Retention in Distance Education
Courses (1 hour)
Topics in this workshop include an overview of
the characteristics of distance education students, challenges these
students face and suggested teaching and intervention strategies for
increasing retention of students in distance education courses.

As requested by faculty, the Instructional Design Specialist (IDS) is
enrolled in Blackboard courses to review instructional techniques and
activities and provide structured feedback to instructor.
As requested by faculty, the Instructional Design Specialist
(IDS) attends an on-campus class meeting(s) to review instructional
techniques and activities and to provide structured feedback to instructor;
this may be especially helpful when planning to place a program/course
online.

As requested by departments who are considering placing new courses or an
entire program online, a full day of training designed for the departmental
needs will be constructed.

the process of placing a program online, a half day of training designed for
the departmental needs will be constructed.
Topics in this workshop would include
philosophy and pedagogy of online courses, fostering community-building and
collaborative learning in an online course, facilitating an online dialogue
to deepen learning , using the Web as a resource for your online course,
evaluating students' progress in an online course, addressing specific
challenges of faculty.
